What is third party van insurance?
The most basic cover required by law is third party van insurance. This covers you for liability for damage caused by you to other people’s property, or for the consequences of injuries they sustain (including your own passengers). Third party van insurance covers damage or injury caused by your van or your trailer while you are towing it.

Importantly, the reason third party van insurance can be much cheaper than third party, fire and theft motor insurance or comprehensive motor insurance is that it doesn’t cover you for your own van, belongings or person.

Vans are usually covered by commercial insurance whose rates vary depending on upon many factors such as your occupation and use. As well as commercial purposes, your third party van insurance policy can include social, domestic and pleasure use. Third party van insurance can also cover you in the EU as well for a stated amount of time, often up to 90 days.

Third party fire and theft motor insurance
Third party van insurance can have the addition of clauses which give you extra protection in the event of fire and theft of your own van. Third Party Fire and Theft motor insurance covers your van if it damaged or stolen provided that you report it to the police. Because van drivers often work in high risk areas and have contents that make them targets for thieves, third party fire and theft motor insurance can be worth considering. The repair or replacement of damaged locks is included in this cover.

If you have extra security fitted to your van this may reduce the price of your third party fire and theft motor insurance quote. An immobiliser can have a Thatcham rating, which means it has been tested by Thatcham, who are non profit making, independently operated with a Board of Directors drawn from insurance companies. If you have an immobiliser installed after purchase of your van, you will receive a Thatcham certificate, which may be needed if you make a claim on your third party fire and theft motor insurance.
